Applications are being invited for a PhD student to conduct research through the Comparative Urban Climate Governance programme; attached to the Environmental Policy Group (ENP) at Wageningen University. Selected candidate(s) will conduct independent research on the possibility for innovative and experimental forms of urban climate governance in the Global South. Selected candidate(s) will develop his/her PhD project in line with questions on the performance of these forms of urban climate governance, their transferability to other regions in the Global South, and their similarities and differences with those dominant in the Global North. The post will be based in Wageningen but expected to spend extended periods of fieldwork in either South America (Mexico City and Sao Paulo) or Africa (Cape Town and Nairobi).
The Comparative Urban Climate Governance programme is funded through a VIDI grant from the Netherlands Organisation of Scientific Research (NWO) and a DECRA grant from the Australian Research Council (ARC). The project is jointly based at Wageningen University and the Australian National University. The programme is led by Dr. Jeroen van der Heijden. The programme compares the development, performance, and potential of innovative and experimental forms of urban climate governance as they have emerged over the last two decades in 15 cities around the globe. It seeks to understand what governance designs result in effective and equitable outcomes, where and why. As an interdisciplinary programme emphasis is given to social, political, economic and ecological dimensions.

  • Proficiency test in the English language (only for candidates from non-Anglophone countries and applicants who have not completed their higher education with English language instruction). Wageningen University has the following admission criteria for PhD students: English proficiency of 6.5 for IELTS, with a minimum of 6.0 for each academic module. You also need an acceptance of the candidate by the supervisors and the equivalent of a Dutch MSc degree.

Conditions of employment

A 4-years funded PhD study. The candidate will be employed by the Wageningen University for the duration of the study.
In principle this is a 48 month PhD position. We offer you a temporary contract for 18 months which will be extended with 30 months if you perform well. Salary will increase from € 2191 gross per month in the first year up to € 2801 in the last year, based on a full-time appointment (38 hours a week). In addition, we offer a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-the-year bonus of 8.3% of your annual salary.
